Federal energy bill keeps PA speeding down the wrong road

In late July, Congress passed a national energy bill that fell far short of the energy policy that environmental and consumer advocates had called for and that America deserves. Specifically, the bill will not protect consumers from high prices at the gas pump, fails to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil, and even failed to include the modest national renewable energy standard that had been part of the Senate’s version of the energy bill. At the same time, the bill did include $4 billion in subsidies for Exxon and other big oil companies.

PennEnvironment applauded the three members of Pennsylvania’s Congressional delegation who stood up to the fossil fuel and nuclear industry lobbyists and voted against the bill—Rep. Fattah (Philadelphia), Rep. Fitzpatrick (Bucks County), and Rep. Schwartz (Montgomery & Philadelphia Counties).
