PennEnvironment study uncovers threat of chemical accidents in PA

On August 4, PennEnvironment released its newest report entitled, “Needless Risk: Oil Refineries and Hazard Reduction” which analyzes the chemical security threat at oil refineries in Pennsylvania.

“Needless Risk” shows that refineries often use the deadly chemical hydrofluoric acid. If an accident occurred at Pennsylvania’s facilities, more than 4.4 million people could be at risk, threatening more people than refineries in any other state in the nation.

This study also shows safer alternatives that refineries could use to diminish the threat of accident. Yet most facilities have balked at switching from highly volatile chemicals to inherently safer technologies.

PennEnvironment is using this report to convince Congress to pass stronger chemical security laws that will require facilities to use safer processes whenever possible.
