PennEnvironment study uncovers threat of chemical accidents in PA

The U.S. House of Representatives took steps to drastically weaken one of the nation’s most respected environmental laws, the Endangered Species Act (ESA), by passing House Bill 3824 this fall. PennEnvironment responded quickly, getting over 1,000 e-mails and phone calls from citizens to their representatives while our staff aggressively lobbied against this legislation.

The ESA has served as the crown jewel of species protection and has bipartisan support. Yet HB 3824 would eliminate critical habitat protections, allow the unlimited use of dangerous pesticides that put species like the bald eagle on the brink of extinction, and require taxpayers to subsidize companies to comply with the ESA. While this legislation passed by a vote of 229-193, PennEnvironment will continue working to stop this proposal from passing the U.S. Senate this winter.
